Virtual Companion for Seniors in Long-Term Care

Adina is a virtual companion for seniors in long-term care. She offers personalized conversations, tailored to the individual user’s preferences, while avoiding sensitive topics, and reminds seniors of activities relevant to their wellbeing. Adina also engages in conversations to help clinicians and caregivers collect health information. The health information obtained can then be automatically summarized into a structured medical chart to support decision-making by caregivers and clinicians, relaying important information collected from the senior at any time, even when a nurse might not be available

Adina is being developed by researchers from the Shared Reality Lab (SRL) and Accessible Computing Technology Research Group (ACT Lab) at McGill University. As part of my postdoctoral research, I am designing and implementing Adina’s NLP components, such as dialogue management and language generation, using Large Language Models and leading the full system integration.
